Labor Day usually ends with a bit of whimper, summer is over and we all shuffle back to school or work with a sigh. All the fun and excitement of staying up late and having drinks with umbrellas in them is over, back to our usual routines. But not this time... excitement descended full force last week.
FIRST
A plane crashed in our little housing development!
Seriously. A real plane. A small one (a Cessna 150), but still... PLUNK, right in our neighbor's yard.
As far as plane crashes go it was very fortunate, the pilot escaped with minor injuries and no one on the ground was hurt. It could have been much, much worse. Apparently, the plane was gliding between houses, flying lower than the rooftop when the wing hit a tree which stopped it, spun it around and dropped it into the bushes. Right on top of a buried propane tank, but fortunately that fact is not part of this story. And equally fortunate, it didn't keep going and impale the house across the street.

Here's the amusing part, the entire neighborhood slept through it, no one was roused until the emergency vehicles arrived, and then we noticed. Well... some of us anyway. It was kind of funny, seeing the neighbors being interviewed on the news, "I never heard a thing!" Made us look very Mayberry.

AND THEN...
We were just starting to recover from the plane crash commotion when a 4–5 foot alligator was spotted prowling the shores of our local lake. The lake where people swim, including bite-size children. The one that is assumed to be prehistoric reptile-free — that lake.

This is the lake our friends were planning to use when their new on-order kayaks arrive. The prospect of being gnawed on takes a lot of the shine off your outdoor fun. Hard to frolic when you're worried about your position on the food chain.
An alligator stalking around down the road is shocking news. It feels like he fell out of the sky too.
