The Anti Purple Pixie

Our new home has the bare minimum of landscaping. We found the perfect solution when our resourceful neighbor put us in touch with a company that creates long-term landscaping plans that homeowners can implement themselves over time.

Our plan calls for Purple Pixie Lorapetalums to be planted along the edges of the plant beds leading up to the house. They are also referred to as Chinese Fringe Flowers. They are quite striking - I love the bright pink flowers and the contrast of the burgundy foliage against our other green shrubs. And I must admit, I was attracted to the whimsical moniker. Oh goodness me! Purple Pixies!

The low growing bedding version can be hard to find, so we've been actively searching for these plants all spring. We found some lovely ones - for $29.99/container, but we need 203 other plants to complete the plan, so we decided to keep looking.

Once again, our resourceful neighbor helped us out when she spotted a $11.99 version at our local home improvement store. It's incredibly handy having a personal shopper on my roster - I'm so much more productive.

But...
as I'm hanging around in Tucson supervising my mother's recovery (which mostly involves a constant stream of reminders to obey doctor's orders) I noticed this horticultural statement in the next door neighbor's front yard. It's gotten noticeably taller each day we've been here. My brother and I are incredulous. And a little bit intimidated. He thinks magic beans are responsible. I think it originated from somewhere in deep space - delivered via meteor. We both agree that if it is indeed a giant asparagus it's going to require a bathtub of Hollandaise sauce.

Compared to this, my Purple Pixies have all the flair of used Kleenex.

Where's the drama with Purple Pixies?

Where's the gasp factor?

Really, how unforgettable are Purple Pixies?

I think it's time the little old lady down the street finds a new dumping spot for her husband's "little blue pills" that he keeps bringing home from the pharmacy! That plant has had enough. ;-)
